Types of winter tires: how to choose

The cold season has arrived, which means that most car owners have "re-shoeed" their vehicles in the appropriate "rubber". Nevertheless, many motorists are often concerned about the question: which winter tire is better and how to choose the right one? We will try to answer these questions in this publication. Types of winter tires

There are two popular types of winter tires:

1. Studded;
2. Unspiked

In addition, "rubber" is divided into classifications, but first we will consider the pros and cons of studded.

Spiked

• Pros: perform very well on a slippery icy road, on packed snow and in harsh conditions.
• Cons: they become useless on a dry hard surface, which significantly accelerates their wear.

Unspiked

These tires are divided into:

• European (Velcro): the usefulness of these tires lies in the drainage system, adaptation to temperature changes, use on cleaned road surfaces and at plus temperatures; harder rubber is used in the composition.
• Scandinavian: useful for moving on snowy roads and ice, have a tread pattern different from other tires; in terms of properties, they are similar to spiked ones, but they do not have spikes; less noisy.

Choice

In order to decide which tires will suit you best, you need to know in which conditions and on which roads the car will be operated. If this is a city with little snow in the winter and with roads that are cleared, then non-studded European ones will come in handy. And if you expect frequent trips on a snowy or icy track, then it is better to choose "spike" or the Scandinavian version.
