The clutch — is one of the most important components of a manual transmission. Thanks to it, you can pull away smoothly, shift gears without jerks, and come to a stop without stalling the engine. Without this mechanism, driving a «manual» would be impossible. If you want to make your car even more comfortable and personalized, it’s worth paying attention to modern tuning accessories that help upgrade the vehicle to your own needs.
What is a clutch and what is it for?
The clutch — is a friction coupling that temporarily connects or disconnects the engine from the gearbox. The main task — is to transfer torque from the engine flywheel to the transmission input shaft smoothly and in a controlled way.
Main clutch components
- Flywheel — a heavy disc attached to the engine crankshaft.
- Clutch disc (also known as the friction disc or driven disc) — has special friction linings.
- Pressure plate (clutch cover/basket) — presses the clutch disc against the flywheel using strong springs.
- Release bearing and fork — transmit the force from the pedal.
- Clutch pedal — the link between the driver and the mechanism.
How the clutch works: two modes
- Pedal released (clutch engaged): The springs in the clutch cover press the clutch disc firmly against the flywheel. Due to friction, all torque is transferred to the gearbox and then — to the wheels. The car moves and can transmit torque to the wheels..
- Pedal depressed (clutch disengaged): The release bearing pushes on the diaphragm spring (or levers) of the clutch cover → the pressure plate moves away → the clutch disc is released → the engine rotates independently of the gearbox. This is the moment when you can safely shift gears.
An interesting point: the «biting point»
When you smoothly release the pedal, there is a moment of partial contact between the discs. The engine begins to «pull» the car, but not at full force yet. It’s in this zone that the driver controls a smooth launch without jerks or unnecessary revving.
Modern clutches typically last 120–200 thousand km with calm driving, but aggressive launches and constantly resting your foot on the pedal significantly reduce service life.
Once you understand how the clutch works, you’ll start to feel the car much better and drive more economically and comfortably.
