Is It Worth Tuning an Electric Car?

The desire to give an electric car individuality is completely natural. However, tuning an EV has its own specifics, differing greatly from modifications of internal combustion vehicles. There are no loud exhausts here, and aerodynamics come first. So, is it worth investing in exterior and interior styling?

The answer is – yes, but with important caveats. While interior tuning is almost always beneficial, exterior changes can either improve or worsen the key characteristic – driving range.

Exterior Tuning

The main challenge in exterior styling of an electric car is not to harm its range.

What can be done safely:

• Vinyl wrap: The simplest and safest way to radically change the color, add graphics, and protect the factory paint.
• Alloy wheels: Choosing wheels with a closed (aerodynamic) design or simply lighter models can positively affect range.
• Proper aero kits: Splitters or diffusers, if engineered by professionals, can improve downforce without significantly reducing range.

What to avoid:

• Installing massive, poorly designed body kits, spoilers, and fender flares. They create significant drag.
• Heavy, large-diameter wheels. They increase unsprung mass and rolling resistance, “eating up” dozens of kilometers of range.

Interior Tuning

The cabin is the area where EV tuning has almost no limits and brings maximum enjoyment.

• Additional sound insulation. Since there’s no engine noise in an EV, tire hum and aerodynamic sounds come to the forefront. Quality insulation makes trips incomparably more comfortable.
• Interior reupholstery. Replacing standard materials with Alcantara, high-quality natural or eco-leather.
• Audio system upgrade. Creating a concert hall atmosphere in an already quiet cabin.
• Ambient lighting. Adding coziness to an often technological and cold interior.

Interior modifications do not affect driving performance but greatly enhance tactile sensations and the overall ownership experience.
