Why does my car smell like exhaust fumes?

Main causes

1. Damaged or blown exhaust manifold gasket: The most common cause. Through cracks or burn-through, hot gases enter the engine bay and from there — through the ventilation — into the cabin.
2. Burnt through or leaking muffler / resonator / exhaust system: Cracks, holes, or loosely tightened clamps allow gases to escape under the car and get drawn into the cabin through the ventilation system or gaps.
3. Faulty EGR system (exhaust gas recirculation): If the EGR valve «sticks» in the open position or its pipes are cracked — a loss of sealing in the system can let some gases into the engine bay.
4. Issues with tailgate or rear door seals: On many models (especially wagons and hatchbacks), exhaust can be pulled into the cabin through gaps around the trunk/tailgate area.
5. Clogged or damaged cabin ventilation system: A dirty cabin filter, a faulty blower fan, or cracks in the heater/AC housing make it easier for gases to get in.
6. Faulty catalytic converter or oxygen sensor: When the catalytic converter is heavily contaminated or damaged, the exhaust composition changes — the smell becomes harsher and can seep into the cabin.

What to do immediately?

• Check whether the smell is coming specifically from the air vents (turn on recirculation — if the smell disappears, the issue is with outside air being drawn in).
• Inspect the exhaust system on a lift or simply under the car.
• Run diagnostics — codes P0400–P0409 often point to the EGR.
• Don’t postpone a visit to a service station: carbon monoxide builds up unnoticed.
