How to install a car battery correctly: step-by-step guide

A car battery — the «heart» of the vehicle’s electrical system. When the old battery no longer starts the engine reliably, it’s time for a replacement. Installing a new battery — not too complicated, but it does require care and the correct sequence. You can also upgrade your car and give it a unique look by using tuning products, with a wide selection of accessories available in our online store.
Preparation for replacement
Before you start, follow a few important steps:
- Park the car on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and remove the key from the ignition.
- Turn off all electrical consumers: headlights, head unit, air conditioning, interior lights.
- Wear protective gloves and, if possible, safety glasses — electrolyte is hazardous to skin and eyes.
- Prepare tools: a 10 mm wrench (or the correct size), a screwdriver, and a brush for cleaning the terminals.
Removing the old battery
In modern cars, disconnecting the battery may reset some electronic settings.
- Open the hood and locate the battery (usually on the right or left side of the engine bay).
- First disconnect the negative terminal (black cable, marked «–» or «GND») — this is the most important safety rule.
- Then disconnect the positive terminal (red cable, marked «+»).
- Undo the battery hold-down (bracket, bolts, or clamp) and carefully remove the old battery.
Installing the new battery
- Inspect the battery tray: remove dirt and corrosion, and check that the hold-down is secure.
- Make sure the new battery matches your vehicle’s requirements for capacity, cranking amps, and terminal polarity.
- Carefully place the battery in position and secure it firmly with the hold-down.
- Connect the positive terminal first — tighten the nut securely.
- Then connect the negative terminal and fasten it securely as well.
- Apply a special terminal protectant or technical petroleum jelly to the terminals — this helps prevent corrosion.
Check after installation
Start the engine and make sure the starter cranks confidently. Check the instrument cluster indicators and the operation of the headlights, head unit, and other consumers. In modern cars with a «start-stop» system or complex electronics, registering the new battery via a diagnostic scanner may sometimes be required.
