A car’s flawless shine is thanks to the top clearcoat layer of the paintwork (LFP). However, over time many owners notice an unpleasant issue: the transparent clearcoat starts peeling, resembling skin that flakes after a burn. This not only ruins the appearance, but also leaves the paint unprotected against corrosion. To make your car look more attractive and presentable, we recommend using tuning accessories, a wide selection of which you can find in our product catalog.
Main causes of clearcoat failure
Clearcoat peeling (delamination) rarely happens overnight. Most often, it’s the result of long-term exposure to several factors:
- Ultraviolet radiation: Extended time in direct sunlight breaks down chemical bonds in the clearcoat structure. It dries out, becomes brittle, and loses adhesion to the basecoat.
- Aggressive car chemicals: Using cheap touchless shampoos with a high alkali content at self-serve washes gradually “burns” through the protective layer.
- Mechanical damage: Small stone chips compromise the coating. Moisture and road salts get under the clearcoat and, under pressure or when freezing, “lift” it from the inside.
- Improper painting process: If a panel was repainted without proper temperature control or applied over an “over-dried” base, the clearcoat won’t bond reliably to the surface.
- Bird droppings and tree sap: These organic substances contain acids that can etch the clearcoat within days if not washed off in time.
How to stop the process and protect your car?
Unfortunately, once the clearcoat has started coming off in flakes, spot repair rarely helps—most often a full repaint of the panel is required. However, prevention works well:
- Apply protective coatings: Hard wax, silicate-based polishes, or “ceramic” coatings create an extra barrier against UV rays.
- Keep your distance: This minimizes the number of gravel chips on the highway.
- Choose quality car washes: Avoid aggressive foam and always rinse chemicals off with plenty of water.
Regular care and storing the car in the shade or under a cover will help preserve the factory look of the bodywork for many years.
