Hurt by suggestions that the original Juke Nismo was more of an exercise in emblem design and body striping than a convincing hatchback alternative, Nissan drugged the second version on steroids and sent it to performance car courses.

The model returned with a variety of structural reinforcements, with a slightly adjusted suspension and larger ventilated brakes, with a mechanical limited slip differential thrown in addition to the front-wheel drive versions.

She was rewarded with an 18 hp promotion and an RS badge. Will she wear it with pride?

Nissan Beetle Nismo RS (2015): first impressions

It seems like a bigger deal than the old Jismo model. Step on the gas in low gears and you'll have to grip the suede-studded steering wheel tightly to counteract the unnatural twisting of parasitic power steering. And while the tension (and sound) of the 1.6-litre turbo engine still begins to be felt as it approaches the limit, the engine is certainly capable of picking up a lot of speed.

But this is not yet the most refined of the driven tools; despite the self-locking differential, all the engine boost quickly overloads the front wheels, and the Juke goes through every corner invariably battling its own inflated, dangling center of gravity.

Is the Nissan Juke Nismo a fully competitive hot hatch alternative?

Very strange sensations arise when driving such a highly dynamic car. On the one hand, you have a fantastic view, like from a "crow's nest", on the other hand, you feel a little unsafe, as if you were put on a slightly unstable high seat, even if it is a Recaro, as in this case.

Verdict

As cute as it is, the RS falls into a curious neutral category. If you're after a hot hatch, there are more finished driving cars, and if you're just after a fancy Juke, the regular Tekna is much easier to drive. More doesn't always mean better.
