What to Do If Your Wipers Are Frozen to the Windshield: Quick and Safe Solutions

In winter, when the temperature drops below zero, many car owners face an unpleasant situation: the windshield wiper blades freeze solidly to the windshield. This not only prevents a quick start to your journey but can also reduce visibility on the road, increasing the risk of accidents. In this article, we’ll go over effective defrosting methods and preventive measures. You can also significantly upgrade your car and give it a unique look by using tuning accessories, available in a wide range in our online store.
What you must never do
To avoid costly repairs and replacement of the wiper blades, remember these simple “don’ts”:
- Do not turn on the wipers: The electric motor won’t be able to move the frozen blades, which can cause a blown fuse or damage to the drive mechanism’s gears.
- Do not pull them off by hand: The rubber may tear away from the frame, and the wiper’s spring mechanism can become deformed.
- Do not pour hot water: A sudden temperature change can cause cracks in the glass, especially if there are already small chips.
Safe defrosting methods
- Gradual cabin heating (the safest method): Start the engine and turn the windshield heater to maximum, directing the flow of warm air toward the base of the wipers. Important: The standard heating system provides gradual warming, preventing sudden temperature changes and the risk of cracking the glass. The heat should slowly melt the ice between the glass and the rubber. This method takes 5–10 minutes but ensures safety.
- Special de-icers: Use a windshield de-icing spray. Apply it directly to the frozen areas. After a few seconds, the ice will melt.
- Washer fluid: If the ice layer is thin, you can use warm (not hot!) antifreeze washer fluid. Spray it onto the glass.
Prevention for the future
To prevent the wipers from freezing, always lift them into a vertical position overnight or use winter covers for them.
