What Are Sand Tracks for Cars and How Are They Used?

When an SUV gets stuck in sand, snow, or mud, sand tracks become a lifesaver. These lightweight plastic or aluminum plates with a textured surface create an artificial support under the wheels, helping you get out without a tow truck. In this article, we’ll look at the design, use, and tips for choosing sand tracks. You can also significantly upgrade your vehicle and make it more functional by using tuning accessories, widely available in our online store.

Design and operating principle

A sand track is a pair of plates 1–1.5 m long and 30–40 cm wide:

• Material: Durable polymer or metal with an anti-slip coating.
• Surface: Spikes, ribs, or perforations for traction.
• Mounting: Holes for ropes or straps.
• Weight: 3–7 kg per pair — easy to store in the trunk.

Principle: the plate is placed under the spinning wheel to increase contact area and grip. The car “crawls” over the track like up a ramp.

How to use sand tracks

The effectiveness of sand tracks depends on proper installation and use.

1. Preparation: Remove excess mud, snow, or sand from under the stuck wheels to ensure maximum traction with the tracks.
2. Installation: Place the sand tracks under the drive wheels, tight against the tire and in the direction of travel. Make sure the tracks lie securely with their grip side facing up.
3. Driving out: Start moving slowly in a low gear, avoiding jerks or wheel spin. The tracks should catch the tread and push the vehicle out.
4. Collection: Once the vehicle reaches solid ground, stop and collect the tracks.

Works in sand, mud, and snow; a pair of tracks can pull out vehicles weighing up to 2.5 tons.

Important: Sand tracks can shoot out from under the wheels like projectiles, so no people or obstacles should be near the vehicle during movement.
