Car spoiler: what it is and why you need it

In short: what a car spoiler is

A spoiler is an aerodynamic add-on on the body that changes airflow and reduces lift on the rear axle. It’s installed on the edge of the trunk lid, on the roof above the rear window, or on the bumper. In everyday speech, people call any protrusion at the rear of a car a “spoiler” — from a thin taped-on “lip” to a full rear wing on uprights.

Don’t confuse it: in movies and books, a “spoiler” means revealing the plot. This article is about a car part.

Choose a spoiler for your car

In the DD Tuning catalog there are 655 spoilers for 31 brands. Prices for popular items range from 690 to 3,910 ₴; carbon and original kits for premium body styles cost more. Each item is tied to a specific body and production years, so start with the brand:

Most often over the past year, customers bought spoilers for BMW 5 G30/G31, Skoda Octavia A7, Volkswagen Golf 7, BMW 5 F10/F11, Hyundai Accent, Mercedes E W212, and Land Rover Defender. Didn’t find your model — message a manager: we bring some items in to order.

Why a spoiler: what it actually does

The honest answer has two parts.

Aerodynamics. At speed, air flowing over the roof creates a low-pressure zone above the trunk — the rear axle gets “unloaded.” A spoiler disrupts this flow and returns some downforce to the wheels. At typical 90–130 km/h, the effect of a lip spoiler is moderate but noticeable during overtakes and in corners; real downforce comes only from large wings, and you only need those on track.

Looks. This is the main reason most of our customers buy one. A single part makes the rear look finished, and a sedan or hatchback look visually lower and tighter. That’s why the most popular models are in the style of factory M Performance, AMG, RS packages.

A side effect of a roof spoiler on a hatchback or wagon: it shields the rear window from rain and dirt.

What to choose between a lip spoiler and a rear wing — we covered separately: rear wing or spoiler. About a rear window spoiler — why you need it and what it’s good for.

Which spoiler for which body style

Sedan. The classic choice is a lip spoiler on the trunk edge. It barely changes the silhouette but removes the “emptiness” above the rear bumper. On BMW 3 and 5 Series sedans, Mercedes C and E, Skoda Octavia, it’s the most popular purchase.

Hatchback. A roof spoiler above the rear window. On Golf, Octavia, Focus it extends the roofline and visually makes the car shorter and lower. Factory GTI/RS packages use exactly this type.

Wagon and crossover. Also on the roof, but more substantial — to suit a taller rear end. Bonus: the rear window gets less dirty on the highway.

Coupe and sport. Both a lip and a wing can work here. A wing makes sense if the car goes to the track; for the street, choose a lip in M Performance style or carbon.

Pickup and SUV. A spoiler on the cab roof or on the edge of the bed — mostly for looks and glass protection. On Defender and Hilux, it’s one of the most frequent purchases in the category.

What spoilers are made from

MaterialProsConsPrice
ABS plasticHolds its shape, easy to paint, not afraid of car washes or морозуSold unprimed or black — needs paintingMost affordable
FiberglassCheap in large molds — wings, body kitsMore brittle, requires prep before paintingMid-range
CarbonLightest, installs without painting, clear-coated weaveExpensive, vulnerable to localized impactsHighest

Most items in the catalog are ABS from DPT, Meliset, and GBT; carbon ones are the DDCarbon line.

Spoiler, diffuser, and splitter: what’s the difference

These three parts are often mixed up because they’re all “about aerodynamics” and all sit at the rear or the front.

  • Spoiler works with airflow over the body — on the trunk edge or roof.
  • Diffuser sits under the rear bumper and works with airflow under the floor: speeds the air up at the exit and adds downforce.
  • Splitter is the “lip” under the front bumper that prevents air from diving under the car.

Most often customers buy a spoiler and a diffuser together, in the same style — it makes the rear look cohesive. The splitter is added third if they want a full aero kit.

How to choose a spoiler

Start with the body and production years. A spoiler for BMW 5 F10 won’t fit a G30 — the trunk edge is different. In the catalog, the years are listed in each item’s name; that’s the first thing to check.

Then choose the type for your car type: sedan — lip on the trunk, hatchback or wagon — roof, sport — wing. See the table above.

Next — whether you’ll paint it. Don’t want to take it to a painter — choose carbon or glossy black ABS that installs as-is.

Mounting. If the car is on lease or you plan to sell it — tape only, no drilling. It removes without a trace.

And style. An M Performance-style spoiler on a BMW or an AMG-style one on a Mercedes looks more appropriate than a “universal sport” — it follows the factory design.

Common mistakes

  • Universal spoiler on a model-specific car. The edge radius won’t match — gaps, peeling, a foreign look. Buy model-specific.
  • Sticking it on in the cold. Below +15 °C, 3M tape won’t bond — the spoiler will fall off in a week. Warm it with a heat gun or install in a heated bay.
  • Washing the next day. Adhesive needs 48 hours. One early high-pressure wash — and the edge lifts.
  • Painting without primer. ABS without adhesion primer holds paint until the first winter. Tell the painter it’s plastic.
  • A rear wing “for looks” on a family sedan. You’ll drill the body, and you won’t get downforce at city speeds. A lip gives the same look without holes.

How much a spoiler costs

Real DD Tuning sales prices over the past year:

  • ABS lip spoiler for popular body styles — 690–1,500 ₴.
  • Roof spoiler for a hatchback or crossover — 1,300–2,500 ₴.
  • M Performance / AMG-style spoiler to be painted — 2,500–4,000 ₴.
  • Carbon and original kits for premium body styles — from 5,000 ₴ and up.

The median purchase price is around 2,500 ₴. Plus painting 800–2,000 ₴ if you choose ABS.

How to care for a spoiler

ABS and carbon are washed like the body — with regular shampoo and a sponge. Two things not to do: don’t aim a high-pressure jet right under the spoiler edge (that’s where the tape is), and don’t rub carbon with abrasive polishing compound — the clear coat over the weave is thinner than on the body. In winter, a tape-mounted spoiler isn’t afraid of морозу if it was bonded in warmth.

How it works

Dry-fit
Place the spoiler against the trunk edge, find the center — make two marks with masking tape at the edges.
Wash and dry the edge
Dust under the tape is the main reason a spoiler peels off after a month.
Degrease the surface
Isopropyl alcohol or the primer from the kit. Do not use solvent — it dulls the clear coat.
Warm up the tape and body
Use a hair dryer until warm — at temperatures below +15 °C the adhesive will not set.
Remove the protective film and press down
From the center to the edges, with pressure, 30–40 seconds on each section.
Secure for a day
Masking tape on top, do not open the trunk suddenly, do not wash.
First wash — after 48 hours
