The best SUVs for off-roading: A comparison of 19 off-road legends
If you dream of conquering off-road, you need a car that will not let you down on steep slopes, in a swamp or among stones. But how to choose the best SUV? We analyzed 19 iconic models — from classic jeeps, such as the Nissan Patrol Y60 and Toyota Land Cruiser 70 , to modern pickups, such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger . In this article, we will analyze 20 key parameters by which these cars were evaluated and show who became the leader of the off-road world. And let me remind you that we have a very large selection of accessories for tuning SUVs.
How we rated SUVs: 20 off-road parameters
To make the comparison as objective as possible, we developed a system of 20 off-road parameters. Each vehicle was assigned a score from 20 (best) to 1 (worst) for each criterion. Here's how we rated them:
1. Ground clearance (ground clearance)
The higher the ground clearance, the easier the car overcomes rocks and logs. The leader is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with a clearance of up to 27.4 cm, while pickups like the Amarok are inferior due to their longer wheelbase.
2. Entry angle
This parameter shows how steep a slope the front of the car can climb without the bumper engaging. Short-wheelbase models like the Rubicon (up to 44°) have an advantage here.
3. Departure angle
Important for descending hills. Again, the Rubicon and Jimny with their short overhangs got the most out of it.
4. Ramp angle (break)
It determines how the car handles sharp bends. The short wheelbase of the Jimny and Rubicon is their superpower.
5. Ford depth
Will your Jeep cross a river? The Rubicon (86 cm) and TLC 80 (70 cm) are ready for serious water obstacles.
6. Suspension travel
Longer travel = better grip on bumps. Rubicon and Defender with axles win against pickups.
7. Drive type
All-wheel drive (4x4) is a must-have for off-roading. Classics like the Patrol and G-Class have permanent 4x4, pickups often have a plug-in.
8. Differential lock
More locks means better traction. The G-Class and Rubicon with three locks are top.
9. Low gear reducer
For slow movement on difficult terrain. All classics have it, pickups don't always have it as standard.
10. Tire type
Factory Mud-Terrain tires (Rubicon, Defender) give an advantage over universal All-Terrain.
11. Frame strength
The frame construction withstands twisting. All 19 models are frame-based, but the classics are stronger.
12. Bottom protection
Factory plates (Rubicon, G-Class) protect against stones better than those of pickup trucks.
13. Side tilt angle
How long does a car hold on a slope? Rubicon and Jimny are leaders due to their compactness.
14. Traction force
For towing or winching. Patrol Y61 and TLC 70 are powerful "tractors".
15. Weight distribution
Even balance improves cross-country ability. Rubicon and Jimny are back on top.
16. Traction control system
Electronics help modern pickups (Hilux '15+, Navara) where classics rely on mechanics.
17. Low RPM Torque
For swamps or sand, "traction" is important. Patrol Y61 and TLC 70 are kings.
18. Wheelbase size
Shorter wheelbase = better maneuverability. Rubicon and Jimny are perfect.
19. Hill descent assist system
Electronics for descents are available in the Rubicon and new pickups, but not in the old classics.
20. Off-road load capacity
Pickup trucks (Navara, Ranger) win due to the body, classics lose in weight.
SUV Rating: Who became the off-road king?
Based on the table, we calculated the total scores for the 19 cars. Here are the results:
Top 5 leaders
1. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon – 367 points
The king of off-road! A short wheelbase, high ground clearance, three locks and a 44° approach angle make it unbeatable.
2. Nissan Patrol Y61 – 324 points
Durable, with three locks and a powerful motor. Ideal for deserts and expeditions.
3. Toyota Land Cruiser 70 – 297 points
A legend that cannot be broken. Simplicity and endurance are its trump cards.
4. Toyota Land Cruiser 80 – 292 points
A more comfortable alternative to the "seventy" with excellent cross-country ability.
5. Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463 – 289 points
"Helik" with three locks is the choice of those who value status and off-road.
Midgets: Classics vs. Pickups
Suzuki Jimny (277 points) — small but fierce. Perfect for narrow trails.
Land Rover Defender (267 points) is a British classic with a farmer's soul.
Mitsubishi Pajero 2 (256 points) is an affordable and reliable mid-range car.
Nissan Patrol Y60 (307 points) is the older brother of the Y61, slightly inferior in comfort.
UAZ Hunter (231 points) — simple as a crowbar, and ready for tuning.
Modern Pickups: Practicality vs. Cross-country Ability
Nissan Navara '05-'15 (230 points) is a workhorse with good off-road capability.
Ford Ranger '11+ (185 points) and Toyota Hilux '15+ (184 points) — a balance between city and off-road.
Mitsubishi L200 '15+ (198 points) — convenient for expeditions, but not for extreme.
Volkswagen Amarok '10-'22 (176 points) is the weakest in the top due to its long wheelbase.
Who lost?
Toyota Hilux '08-'15 (171 points) — durable, but inferior in maneuverability.
Mercedes-Benz X-Class (186 points) — a "luxury Navara" without any special off-road bonuses.
Conclusion: Which SUV to choose?
If you need a versatile monster for extreme off-roading , take the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon - its short wheelbase and locking have no competitors. For long expeditions in the desert, the Nissan Patrol Y61 or Toyota Land Cruiser 70 are ideal - endurance and low-rev traction are in their blood. And if load capacity and practicality are important, modern pickups like the Navara or Ranger will become your assistants.
Whichever SUV you choose, remember: the main thing is the preparation of the car and your driving skills. Share in the comments which jeep is your favorite, and go conquer the off-road!
