Hyundai Sonata: How to remove the trunk lid — step by step

The trunk lid on the Hyundai Sonata is a fairly large part that you may need to remove from time to time: to repair the lock, for painting, or to fix damage after an accident. The procedure isn’t too complicated, but it does require care and a helper, since the lid weighs about 15–20 kg depending on the model generation (NF, YF, LF, DN8, etc.). To make the car look more striking and stylish, you can use accessories from tuning for Hyundai Sonata, a wide selection of which is available in our product catalog.
Preparation and required tools
Before you start, prepare a socket set (usually 10 and 12 mm), a flathead screwdriver for clips, and a marker. We also recommend bringing in a helper to avoid damaging the paintwork when removing the part.
Step-by-step instructions for removing the trunk lid
- Open the trunk and disconnect the negative battery terminal (recommended for electrical safety).
- Remove the inner trim of the lid (plastic panel). It’s held in place by clips and a few screws near the handle and lock. Carefully pry it off with a trim tool, starting from the edges.
- Disconnect all wiring. Locate the wiring harness (usually on the left or right) and unplug the connectors for the camera, license plate light, lock heater, etc.
- Disconnect the gas struts (lift supports). Support the lid with a wooden block or have a helper hold it. Remove the retaining clips or undo the bolts securing the struts to the lid (if it’s a clip, it’s enough to gently pry it up—no need to remove it).
- Mark the hinge positions with a marker—this will make reinstallation much easier and help preserve the panel gaps.
- Undo the hinge mounting bolts (usually 2 bolts per hinge—10 or 12 mm). Start with the upper ones, then the lower ones. Hold the lid with two people.
- Carefully remove the lid, moving it back and up so it doesn’t contact the body.
Helpful tips
- Before reassembly, lubricate the hinges and lock with silicone lubricant.
- Check the gap alignment after installation—the lid should close smoothly, without misalignment.
Removing the trunk lid on a Hyundai Sonata takes 30–60 minutes if you have experience and a helper. Problems are rare as long as you don’t rush and don’t damage the wiring.
