In March 2026, the last fifth-generation Toyota GR Supra (A90) rolled off the assembly line — a sports coupe that was produced for seven years together with BMW. Toyota has not officially unveiled a successor yet, but it is not hiding it either: the company says there will be a new Supra, and the Japanese press is already talking about an in-house platform, a 2.0-liter turbo engine, and hybrid assistance. We break down what is a statement from the manufacturer and what is still rumor.
Illustrations for the article are renderings: this is what the next Supra could look like. There are no official images of the model yet.
Why the GR Supra A90 left the line
The current Supra revived the name in 2019 after a 17-year break: the previous A80 disappeared from production back in 2002. The A90 was created as a pair with the BMW Z4 — a shared platform, BMW engines (a 3.0 L turbocharged inline-six and, in some markets, a 2.0-liter inline-four), and a shared contract production line at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. We have already published a detailed review of the fifth-generation Supra.
On October 24, 2025, Toyota Gazoo Racing officially announced: GR Supra production will end in March 2026. According to specialized publications, the last cars left the plant in Graz at that time. The reasons cited by the press are tougher global safety and emissions requirements and the cost of updating a model that is already seven years old.
As a farewell, Toyota released two final versions. The European A90 Final Edition is the most powerful Supra in the model’s history: 441 hp (324 kW) and 571 N·m instead of the stock 340 hp and 500 N·m, a top speed of 275 km/h, KW adjustable suspension, Brembo brakes, and carbon aerodynamic parts. Production is limited to just 300 cars worldwide. The American Final Edition kept the standard 382 hp but received revised chassis and brakes.
What Toyota officially says about the successor
There is no press release about the sixth-generation Supra: Toyota has not named the platform, the engine, or the premiere date. There are only a few statements, and all of them are cautious.
- Toyota Europe back in 2024, announcing the Final Edition, wrote that production of the current Supra would end with this version, and that Gazoo Racing would continue to develop the model through motorsport.
- Toyota North America executives — Vice President of Product Planning Cooper Ericksen and Toyota brand head David Christ — in an interview with MotorTrend called continuing the model “logical.” According to them, there will be a gap between generations, but much shorter than between the A80 and the A90.
- In the same place, they уточнили, that the decision whether to make the new Supra independently or again with a partner is made in Japan.
In other words, Toyota effectively acknowledges the very fact of a successor, and everything else is still at the level of insider information.
Rumors about the sixth generation
2.0 L turbo and a hybrid instead of the BMW “six”
The most frequently repeated version comes from the Japanese magazine Best Car: the new Supra is being developed by Toyota and Gazoo Racing independently, without BMW, on their own rear-wheel-drive platform. Under the hood, an inline turbocharged 2.0 L four-cylinder with hybrid assistance is expected, and the publication estimates the combined output at around 400 hp. The rumored premiere date is 2027, but Toyota has not confirmed it.
This rumor has an official basis. In May 2024, at the Multi-pathway Toyota seminar, Toyota together with Mazda and Subaru showed new compact 1.5 and 2.0 L engines. Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima emphasized that they are designed for electrification from the start, and that their lower height makes it possible to lower the hood, while the 2.0-liter turbo engine is intended for a wide range of vehicles — from heavy cars to sports cars. Supra was not mentioned directly.
A backup option, which the American press writes about citing the same sources, is Mazda’s 3.3 L inline-six with a mild hybrid, as in the CX-70 and CX-90 crossovers. This layout — an inline “six” — is familiar to Supra owners.
A twin under the Lexus brand
According to Best Car, a pair of models could appear on the new platform: a two-seat Supra and a Lexus coupe with a 2+2 layout that would replace the RC and LC. Even the outlets that retell this rumor advise treating it with caution: the sources are anonymous.
GR GT and FT-Se are not Supra
Two recent Gazoo Racing premieres are often confused with the Supra successor. On December 5, 2025, Toyota showed the GR GT — a flagship sports car with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, a hybrid system in the rear transmission, an aluminum frame, and a target output from 650 hp. Launch is planned for around 2027, but it is a different class of car, above the Supra. Toyota also has not officially linked the electric two-seat FT-Se concept with two electric motors (2023) to the Supra name.
What this means for current Supra owners
Even if a successor appears in 2027, the A90 will remain the current Supra on the roads for a long time — and a car that people actively tailor to their own taste. For it, there are carbon spoilers, trim pieces, and diffusers for Supra 2019+, and the overall selection is in the Toyota tuning section.
