Opel Vivaro: How to remove the steering wheel correctly

Removing the steering wheel on Opel Vivaro (A 2001–2014, B 2014–2019, C 2019+) is often needed to replace the airbag, repair the steering column switches, install a new wheel, or eliminate play. The procedure isn’t too complicated, but it requires strict safety precautions because of the airbag. Preparation

Before you start, make sure you do the following:

• Park the vehicle on a level surface, switch off the ignition, and remove the key.
• Disconnect the negative battery terminal (wait 10–15 minutes for the capacitors to discharge).
• Turn the steering wheel so you can access the retaining clips on the back of the wheel.

How to remove the airbag

1. Find two small holes on the back of the steering wheel (usually on the sides or underneath).
2. Insert a thin screwdriver or a special tool into the hole and press the spring clip.
3. At the same time, gently pull the airbag toward you (down or up depending on the generation).
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors (yellow or orange) – do this carefully and don’t pull on the wires.

Step-by-step steering wheel removal

After removing the airbag:

1. Disconnect all visible connectors (horn, steering wheel buttons, airbag clock spring).
2. Secure the steering wheel or ask an assistant to hold it while you loosen the fastener.
3. Using a socket wrench (depending on the generation, it may be a nut or a Torx bolt), loosen the central retaining bolt (to the left – loosens).
4. Wiggle the wheel by hand and gradually pull it off the splines.
5. Carefully feed the wiring through the opening in the steering wheel.

Important tips and warnings

• Mark the initial position of the steering wheel with a marker.
• Do not rotate the clock spring (contact ring) after removing the steering wheel — this can damage it and trigger an SRS error.
• After removing the steering wheel, do not reconnect the battery until everything is installed back in place.
• After reassembly, check the horn and button functions and confirm there’s no airbag error using a scanner.
