How to Prepare Your Car for a Long Winter Trip: Safety on the Road

A winter road trip of over 1000 km is always a challenge for both car and driver. Frost, snowfalls, and road salt can turn the journey into a nightmare if you’re not prepared in advance. Here’s a complete checklist that can save you even on the highway at –30 °C. Also, to make your car more functional and refined, you can use tuning accessories, a wide selection of which is available in our online store.
Technical preparation
Before a long winter trip, pay attention to the key technical components that operate under increased load:
- Tyres: Check the remaining tread depth of your winter tyres (it should be sufficient) and the correct pressure. For mountain areas or unploughed roads, make sure you have snow chains.
- Battery (AKB): Check the voltage and, if necessary, fully charge the battery. Ensure the terminals are clean and securely fastened. A weak battery is the main cause of starting problems in freezing weather.
- Fluids: Replace the engine oil with fresh oil of suitable winter viscosity (if it’s time for a change). Make sure the cooling system is filled with quality antifreeze and the washer tank with a frost-resistant fluid.
- Brakes: Check the condition of the brake pads, discs, and brake fluid level. In winter, braking distance increases, so the system must work perfectly.
Emergency kit and inspection
Preparation for unforeseen situations and ensuring good visibility are equally important:
Winter kit: Your trunk should always contain:
- Shovel (folding or spade type) for digging out of snow.
- Tow rope and jumper cables.
- Sand tracks or a piece of plywood to drive out of snow or ice.
- Extra warm clothing, a blanket, and a thermos with a hot drink.
Visibility: Make sure the wiper blades are in good condition. Replace burnt-out bulbs and adjust the headlights. Treat locks and seals with silicone lubricant.
