How to Properly Maintain Your Car Headlights

Car headlights are a key element of road safety. Over time, they become cloudy due to ultraviolet light, road dust, sand, and chemicals, reducing light brightness by 30–50%. Regular maintenance restores transparency, improves illumination, and extends the lifespan of the optics. In this article, we’ll go over the main care rules. You can also give your car a distinctive look and highlight its exterior by using tuning accessories, available in a wide range in our product catalog.
Main stages of headlight care
To maintain maximum light output, it’s recommended to follow a systematic approach:
- Gentle washing: Never wipe dry headlights with a cloth or your hand. Fine sand particles act like sandpaper, leaving deep scratches. Use plenty of water and mild shampoos.
- Timely polishing: If the protective lacquer has become dull, professional polishing will help restore transparency. However, remember to apply a protective layer afterward (for example, a polyurethane film), otherwise the plastic will oxidize again quickly.
- Checking for tightness: If condensation appears inside the headlight, check the housing integrity and the condition of the ventilation valves. Excess moisture quickly damages reflectors and ignition units.
- Replacing bulbs in pairs: The light output of bulbs (especially halogen and xenon) degrades over time. To ensure even lighting, replace both bulbs at the same time.
- Beam adjustment: Once a year or after any suspension work, check the beam direction on a test stand. Improperly adjusted headlights either shine into the sky or dazzle oncoming drivers.
Protection – the best care
The most effective way to keep headlights in perfect condition is to cover them with a transparent polyurethane film. It absorbs gravel impacts and the chemical effects of road reagents, extending the life of expensive optics.
