How to Paint Steel Wheels Properly by Yourself

Steel stamped wheels inevitably lose their appearance over time: chips, scratches, and a rusty layer of corrosion appear. DIY painting — is an excellent way to restore the aesthetic look of your wheels and protect the metal from damage without resorting to expensive workshop services. Preparation — the key to durability

The most important stage — is not the actual paint spraying, but careful surface preparation. Without it, the new coating will peel off after the first wash.

• Cleaning and washing: Thoroughly wash the wheels to remove road dirt and brake dust.
• Rust removal: Use a wire brush or drill attachment to clean corrosion spots down to bare metal.
• Sanding: Treat the entire surface with sandpaper (grit P240–P400) to create a matte texture for better adhesion.
• Degreasing: The final step before painting — wipe with anti-silicone or solvent.

Painting process: step-by-step guide

For best results, use special aerosol wheel enamels that offer increased wear resistance.

1. Priming: Apply 2 coats of anti-corrosion primer. This creates a protective barrier and evens out the microrelief.
2. Base coat application: Spray the paint in thin layers from a distance of 25–30 cm. Ideally, apply 2–3 coats with intermediate drying for 10–15 minutes.
3. Clear coat (optional): A layer of clear varnish adds depth to the color and extra protection against chemicals and sand.

Important notes:

• Cover the valve and tire seating area before painting;
• Painting is best done at a temperature of +15…+25 °C;
• Use is possible after 24–48 hours, full curing — up to 7 days.
