Preparing a Toyota Hilux for off-road use with the Dakar kit
Toyota Hilux is well suited for use off the asphalt, but for regular driving on dirt roads and challenging sections, the stock configuration may not be enough. In this project, the vehicle received a complete Dakar exterior package: metal side steps, a reinforced rear bumper, and a tow hitch.
The main goal was to make the Hilux more practical off-road, add protection for the lower and rear sections of the body, and at the same time create a more aggressive off-road look. All work was carried out in Chernivtsi at the certified ZUBRYN AUTO STUDIO service center.
Dakar side steps for Toyota Hilux
One of the first components was the Dakar V1 metal side steps for Toyota Hilux 2006–2015. This is a set of two black illuminated steps that not only changes the vehicle’s appearance, but also adds everyday practicality.
For a pickup with high ground clearance, side steps make getting in and out of the cabin easier. This is especially noticeable during daily use or when the Hilux is fitted with larger wheels or additionally lifted compared to the factory height.
The metal construction also creates an extra protective contour along the lower part of the body. The steps partially cover the area under the doors from dirt, stones, and other road debris, and their rugged design matches the off-road character of the Hilux well.
What do Dakar side steps add off-road?
On dirt roads, the lower body is constantly exposed to dust, mud, water, and small stones thrown up by the wheels. Additional metal components help shield the most exposed areas while also reducing the risk of accidental contact between the lower body and obstacles when maneuvering.
The lighting adds convenience in the dark, and the black finish pairs well with other Dakar parts. Thanks to this, the steps don’t look like a random add-on, but become part of one cohesive package.
Reinforced Dakar rear bumper
The rear of the Toyota Hilux was upgraded with a reinforced Dakar rear bumper. It comes in black and features lighting, helping maintain the overall style of the installed side steps.
For a pickup, the rear bumper is an especially important element, since the vehicle is often used for hauling, trips outside the city, and driving on uneven roads. The reinforced design makes the rear look more substantial and better suited to the vehicle’s purpose.
After installation, the stock rear end of the Hilux takes on a more utilitarian, off-road-ready appearance. Combined with the side steps, the vehicle feels like a complete off-road project rather than a standard pickup with a few decorative accessories.
Installing a tow hitch on Toyota Hilux
Another part of the project was a tow hitch for the Dakar bumper. It complements the rear protection element and expands the vehicle’s practical capabilities.
A tow hitch is relevant for Hilux owners who plan to use a trailer or other compatible towing equipment. For a work pickup, this functionality is often no less important than the exterior tuning itself.
During installation, it’s necessary to align the component correctly in relation to the bumper and mounting points. It is especially important that all parts work as a single structure and do not create misalignment after the fasteners are fully tightened.
Why is it better to install the Dakar kit as a complete package?
Side steps, a rear bumper, or a tow hitch each solve specific tasks on their own, but the most logical result comes from installing them as a set. Dakar components share a similar styling, so after installation the vehicle looks cohesive.
- side steps protect the lower body and make entry easier;
- the reinforced rear bumper transforms the rear and adds a protective element;
- the tow hitch expands the pickup’s practical capabilities;
- black metal parts create a unified off-road style;
- the package highlights the Toyota Hilux purpose as a vehicle for tougher operating conditions.
How was the Dakar kit installed?
The work began with checking the completeness of the parts and a preliminary test fit. For metal components, it’s important to correctly determine mounting points, check geometry, and verify the position of the parts relative to the body.
The steps must be installed symmetrically and parallel to the body. The rear bumper needs to be aligned precisely with the rear of the vehicle, after which the position of the tow hitch and all fasteners is checked.
Since the kit includes illuminated parts, installation also requires proper connection of electrical components. After the work is completed, the fastening of the structures and the operation of the additional equipment are checked.
Cost of the installed equipment and labor
The cost of the Dakar side steps for Toyota Hilux in this project was 17 094 UAH. The total labor cost for installing the side steps, reinforced rear bumper, and tow hitch came to 7 000 UAH.

What changed after installing the kit?
After installing the Dakar parts, the Toyota Hilux began to look noticeably more substantial. The black metal steps emphasized the side profile, the reinforced rear bumper transformed the rear, and the tow hitch added practicality.
At the same time, the tuning is not purely decorative. The kit is designed for operating conditions where additional protective elements, easier entry, and the ability to use towing equipment matter.
Who is this Toyota Hilux tuning for?
The Dakar kit will be relevant for Toyota Hilux owners who use the pickup not only in the city. This may include regular use on dirt roads, trips outdoors, work routes, or gradually preparing the vehicle for off-road driving.
This option is also suitable for those who want to make a stock Hilux look more aggressive without a full rebuild. The steps and rear bumper significantly change the appearance while preserving the pickup’s signature design.
The result of preparing a Toyota Hilux for off-road use
The comprehensive installation of Dakar side steps, a reinforced rear bumper, and a tow hitch made it possible to combine exterior tuning with practical equipment. The Toyota Hilux gained a more pronounced off-road style, additional metal components on the lower and rear sections of the body, and a functional tow hitch.
This format of preparation allows you to upgrade the vehicle gradually without changing its basic design. For the Hilux, it’s a logical solution when you need more than decorative tuning—a set of parts designed for practical pickup use.
