How to Properly Maintain Your Car Sunroof

A sunroof — is not only a comfort feature that lets you enjoy fresh air and views, but also a mechanism that requires regular maintenance. Without proper care, it can start to squeak, leak, or even jam completely, leading to costly repairs. In this article, we’ll explain how to keep your sunroof in perfect condition so it serves you for years. You can also enhance your car’s functionality and upgrade it using tuning accessories, which are widely available in our product catalog.
Cleaning the drainage system
The drainage holes — the most important part responsible for sealing. They are designed to drain water that seeps through the seals:
- Inspection: Regularly check the four (or two) drainage holes located at the corners of the sunroof frame.
- Cleaning: Use compressed air (carefully) or a soft, thin piece of wire or fishing line to clear the drainage tubes of accumulated debris, leaves, and dirt.
- Flow test: Pour a little water into the open drainage hole. The water should flow quickly and freely under the car (usually near the front or rear wheels). If the water stagnates — the channel is blocked.
Lubricating the mechanism and seals
The smooth operation of the sunroof directly depends on the condition of the guides and rubber parts:
- Guides: After cleaning, apply a thin layer of specialized silicone or lithium grease to the metal guides and cables. This prevents corrosion and sticking.
- Rubber seals: Treat the rubber seals around the sunroof with silicone spray or glycerin. This keeps them elastic, prevents freezing in winter, and restores their water-repellent properties.
Important: Avoid using thick greases that can attract dust and dirt, turning into an abrasive paste. Perform a full maintenance cycle (cleaning + lubrication) at least twice a year — in spring and autumn.
