How to adjust car doors: step-by-step guide

Before you grab your tools, make sure the problem is actually in the adjustment:

• Visible offset: body and door lines don’t match.
• Extra effort to close: you have to slam the door harder.

• Seal wear: uneven contact of the rubber seal to the body.

Steps to adjust the doors

For the job you’ll need spanners, screwdrivers, or Torx bits, depending on the car model.

1. Check the gaps. Close the door and inspect the gaps around the perimeter. They should be even.
2. Adjust the hinges. Loosen the hinge-to-body bolts. With small movements, raise or lower the door to the desired position, then tighten the bolts.
