Why the Car Doesn’t Detect the Key: Main Causes and Fixes

Modern keyless entry systems (Keyless Go) offer drivers great comfort, but sometimes they can bring an unpleasant surprise. When you press the engine start button and the dashboard displays the message «Key not found», it can cause panic. However, most causes of this malfunction can be fixed on your own. You can also significantly enhance your car’s appeal and give its exterior more character by using tuning accessories, a wide range of which is available in our product catalog.
The most common causes of malfunction
Electronics can be temperamental, and the connection between the key tag and the car’s antennas may be interrupted by several factors:
- Dead battery: This is the most common reason (about 90% of cases). Even if the door buttons still work, the signal strength may be insufficient for the immobilizer.
- Radio interference: Near power lines, TV towers, or large shopping centers, the signal may be «blocked» by external radiation.
- Metal shielding: If the key is in your pocket together with a mobile phone or coins, it creates a barrier for the signal.
- Car battery: If the vehicle’s battery is heavily discharged, the keyless entry system may shut down to save energy.
What to do in such a situation?
Don’t rush to call a tow truck. Try the following steps:
- Replace the power source: Buy a new battery (usually type CR2032 or CR2025).
- Emergency start: Almost every car has a «reading» zone for the key even without power. Try holding the key close to the Start/Stop button or to a special mark on the steering column.
- Use the mechanical blade: Inside every smart key there is a hidden mechanical blade that allows you to open the door manually.
- If you have a spare key, check if the car works with it — this will help you locate the problem faster.
Technical malfunctions
If these actions don’t help, the issue may lie in a faulty antenna inside the cabin or a software error in the control unit. In this case, you’ll need the assistance of a qualified auto electrician.
