Faux leather or fabric: which seat covers stay warm in winter

Why eco-leather feels icy in freezing weather while fabric doesn’t, which seat covers work best with seat heating, and how not to get it wrong with side airbags. We compare eco-leather, fabric, velour and mixed covers for winter.

In winter, you get into a car that’s been standing out in the мороз all night — and you immediately feel the difference between seats: some “burn” with cold even through a jacket, while others are tolerable from the very first second. Let’s figure out why that happens, which seat covers are more comfortable in winter — eco-leather, fabric, or комбіновані — and how they get along with seat heating and side airbags.

Contents

In brief

  • Fabric and velour feel warmer to the touch than eco-leather at the same temperature — they do not draw body heat away as quickly.
  • Eco-leather is cold only for the first few minutes: once it warms up from your body or from the heater, the difference disappears. On the plus side, snow, dirt, and salt wipe off easily.
  • With factory seat heating, a thinner and more porous material lets heat through faster; a thick покрытия heats up more slowly.
  • Combined covers — fabric where you sit, eco-leather on the боковинах — combine warmth and practicality.
  • Side airbags in the seats are a reason to choose model-specific covers and, before buying, уточнювати how the seam is made in the airbag zone.

Why eco-leather feels colder

After a night in a parking lot, all seats in the cabin cool down to the same temperature. But the sensation of “cold” is determined not by the temperature itself, but by how quickly the material draws heat from your skin. Physicists call this thermal activity (thermal effusivity). A dense, smooth surface with no air inside conducts heat away actively, so it feels icy. Fabric and pile retain air, and air is a good insulator, so your body almost instantly warms the thin layer beneath you.

Measurements for car seats show that leather draws heat about four times more actively than fabric. Eco-leather is the same kind of dense film surface, so it behaves similarly: in winter it feels colder to the touch, and in summer in the sun it feels hotter than fabric. Still, this is only the first impression. Once the surface has warmed to body temperature, sitting becomes equally comfortable.

Eco-leather, fabric, velour: a winter comparison

If the car stays outside overnight and there is no seat heating, the fabric or velour top feels warmer to the touch. But if the interior often sees snow, wet clothing, or children in dirty shoes, eco-leather is more practical — you can simply wipe it clean. You can see ready-made options in the sections fabric covers and eco-leather covers.

Covers and seat heating

The heating element of factory seat heating lies under the seat upholstery, and any cover on top is an extra layer between it and you. Cover manufacturers say it directly: thick materials such as artificial leather, neoprene, or dense capes let heat through, but more slowly, while thin fabrics, velour, and Alcantara do so faster. A dense, non-breathable coating also traps heat underneath, so the seat takes longer to warm up.

  • You have heating and use it every day — choose fabric, velour, or combined covers with a fabric center.
  • You choose eco-leather — it will warm up, but not instantly; switch the heating on as you start the engine.
  • Do not put extra cushions or blankets under the cover and do not pierce the seat when securing the cover — the heating wires run in the верхньому layer of the upholstery.

If there is no factory heating at all, other ways to keep warm are covered in the article what to do if the cabin is cold and there is no factory seat heating.

What happens to eco-leather in мороз

Artificial leather is a fabric base with a polymer coating. Such coatings stiffen in cold weather: the lower the temperature, the less they bend. There is even a separate test for them — low-temperature flex testing — which shows whether the coating will crack in мороз. Polyurethane coatings are usually more elastic in the cold than cheap PVC.

The practical conclusions are simple. In a frozen cabin, sit down without jerks and do not fold cold eco-leather in half — for example, when folding the rear seat backrest. Let the cabin warm up a bit. Do not apply silicone polishes or solvent-based products to eco-leather — they dry out the coating, and it loses elasticity faster.

Combined covers — a winter compromise

Most often, people choose not “pure” eco-leather and not solid fabric, but a combination: a fabric insert in the center of the seat and backrest, with eco-leather on the sides. Where you sit, it is warmer and the seat heating works better, while the sides — which rub against your jacket when getting in and are the first to catch snow — wipe clean easily. For example, such EMC model covers in eco-leather and fabric are available for Volkswagen T5 Caravelle and Peugeot Partner Tepee, and for Toyota Corolla 2013–2019 — fully fabric. All of them are secured with hooks.

If you do not need full covers for your car, you can cover only the front seats with seat protectors — velour, eco-leather, or combined. But remember: a protector covers the central part of the seat and backrest, not the sides. The full range is in the covers section.

Fit and side airbags

To keep a cover from slipping and bunching up in folds, model-specific covers are sewn from patterns for a particular interior. Therefore, before ordering, check not only the brand and model, but also the seat configuration: whether the rear backrest is split, how many headrests there are, whether there is an armrest, and whether the seats are factory. In passenger-cargo vehicles, the front seat layout is уточнюють separately, for example 1+2.

Special attention goes to side airbags built into the backs of the front seats. The airbag deploys through a seam in the upholstery, so the cover must not interfere with it: compatible covers use a weakened seam in this area, which splits open during deployment. If your seat backs have an SRS or Airbag marking, check with the manager whether such a seam is предусмотрено in the выбранній cover model, and do not restitch the side panel yourself.

Winter care for covers

  • Shake off snow from your clothing before getting in: melted snow with salt leaves stains on fabric and a white residue on eco-leather.
  • Wipe eco-leather with a damp, soft cloth and dry it; harsh chemicals can damage it.
  • Fabric covers should be cleaned with textile foam or washed — details are in the article can you wash car seat covers. After washing, dry them completely: a damp cover in a cold cabin dries for a long time, and the windows fog up.
  • Every few weeks, check the hooks and fasteners — in a cold cabin, elastic bands and plastic are less elastic.

Frequently asked questions

Fabric and velour feel warmer to the touch. Eco-leather has the same temperature, but it draws heat from the body faster, so it feels colder at first. Once the surface warms up, the difference almost disappears.
Yes. Thin fabrics, velour, and alcantara let heat pass through faster, while thicker materials like artificial leather do so more slowly, so the seat warms up longer. Do not place extra cushions under the cover and do not puncture the upholstery during installation.
In cold weather, the polymer coating hardens and becomes less flexible. To avoid damaging it, do not bend cold eco-leather sharply, sit down without jerks, let the cabin warm up, and do not use silicone polishes or solvents.
Choose model-specific covers and, before buying, ask the manager whether they include a weakened seam in the side airbag area. You should not re-sew the side sections yourself.
Eco-leather or combined covers with eco-leather side sections: snow and salt can be wiped off them easily, while the fabric center remains warm to the touch.
A cover drapes over the center section of the seat and backrest, but not the side sections, and is usually sold for one seat. A full model-specific cover is sewn to the cabin patterns and fully covers the seat.
