How to Avoid Accidents on Winter Roads

Winter turns ordinary roads into real testing grounds, even for experienced drivers. Ice, snow, limited visibility, and longer braking distances sharply increase the risk of accidents. Golden rules of winter driving

The key to safety in freezing conditions lies in smooth and controlled movements. A sudden steering input or hard braking on a slippery surface can instantly turn your car into an uncontrollable projectile.

• Increased distance: On ice, the braking distance can be up to ten times longer than on dry asphalt. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead — at least double the usual gap.
• Smooth braking: Use intermittent pedal pressure or engine braking. If your car is equipped with ABS, press the pedal firmly but stay calm.
• No sudden overtaking: The slushy area between lanes is a high-risk zone. When changing lanes, your tires may lose grip and cause a skid.

Preparation and visibility

Your safety starts before you even begin to drive. In winter, visibility is crucial:

1. Thorough cleaning: Don’t just clear snow from the windows — remove it from the roof as well to prevent it from sliding onto the windshield when braking.
2. Lighting mode: Always check that your headlights and taillights are clean. In heavy snow, use fog lights for better contrast.
3. Washer fluid: Make sure the reservoir is always filled with quality antifreeze fluid.
4. Winter tires — with good tread depth (at least 4–5 mm).

Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses, shaded areas, and curves — ice forms there first.

If a skid begins

Remember the basic rule: with rear-wheel drive, ease off the gas; with front-wheel drive, gently accelerate to “pull” the car straight. In both cases, steer in the direction of the skid.
