Opel STX Concept is an electric concept estate that Opel is showing at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October 2026. The name stands for Sports Tourer eXperimental: it is a vision of the estate car of the future and, according to Auto Express, a direct hint at the next Astra, which is set to debut on the Stellantis STLA One platform around 2029–2030. Only one thing has been officially confirmed: there will definitely be an estate version in the new Astra, while a regular hatchback is not necessarily guaranteed.
What Opel STX Concept is and where it is being shown
Opel published the first teaser images on 1 October 2026, and the full reveal is scheduled for Mondial de l'Auto in Paris, running from 12 to 18 October. Opel's press conference is on Monday, 12 October, at 11:40 at stand A42 in hall 4. Nearby on the stand will be production EVs: Opel Corsa GSE and Mokka GSE. We covered other show premieres in our overview «Paris Motor Show 2026: dates and main premieres».
Opel itself calls the STX a study rather than a production model. The company does not disclose dimensions, battery, range, or production plans. Opel CEO Florian Huettl explains the idea like this: the STX Concept lets you feel just how exciting and emotional tomorrow's estate car can be. He also reminded that Opel was among the pioneers of estate cars in Europe back in the 1950s. The illustrations in this article are renderings of what the STX might look like based on the teaser, not factory photos.
What the STX looks like and what of it will carry over to production Opel models
Front end: a new generation of Vizor
Opel's signature Vizor face stops being a black strip. On the STX, the shape of the “face” is drawn by the light itself: slim, slanted vertical blades form a new lighting signature, and the illuminated Blitz “lightning bolt” sits at the center of the Compass graphic — a kind of wind rose. According to Auto Express, there is no glossy black plastic on the front at all; the surfaces are painted in body color, and the emblem has become larger so it can be seen from afar. The same blades are repeated at the base of the windshield and on the center console.
Rear end: an “overhanging” roof and full-width glass
The silhouette is unusual for an estate. The front edge of the roof is the furthest point of the car, and the rear seems to be tucked underneath it. The rear wheel arches create a pronounced shoulder line, the rear pillars are massive, and the rear glass is made as a single piece together with the lights. The glass in the rear pillars has black rectangular inserts that mask the line of the tailgate. Opel has not shown the interior yet — only that it will develop the idea of “Painting with Light”.
Aerodynamics are the concept’s main theme
Opel explains the STX shape by the fact that, for an EV, air resistance directly determines energy consumption and range. The concept features active aerodynamics: movable elements at the rear and in the outer zones of the bumper adapt to the driving mode to reduce drag and add stability at speed — Opel specifically mentions German autobahns. This is complemented by surfaces recessed flush with the body and three-section wheel designs. Vauxhall design vice president Mark Adams put it this way: in an EV, aerodynamics are not a bonus, but a necessity.
Opel is sparing with details about the powertrain. According to Carscoops, the concept has electric all-wheel drive and a top speed above 200 km/h. Power output, battery capacity, and range have not been named — and in a production car they will be different anyway.
Will the next Opel Astra be estate-only
There is no definitive answer yet, but Opel's position is already clear from the CEO's words. In an Auto Express interview (14 September 2026), Florian Huettl said: “I can say that the estate will be there, because our home market demands it” — meaning Germany. And he immediately added that the new Astra will not necessarily be a traditional hatchback. Some outlets write that a crossover-style version could appear on the same platform, and Auto Express allows that the Astra could become estate-only altogether. Officially, however, only the estate has been confirmed.
| What is known about the next Astra | Status |
|---|---|
| Estate body (Sports Tourer) | Confirmed by Opel CEO |
| Classic hatchback | Not guaranteed (“not necessarily a traditional hatchback”) |
| Crossover on the same base | Rumors, not officially confirmed |
| Platform | Stellantis STLA One (according to Auto Express) |
| Drivetrain type | “Definitely an EV”; STLA One technically allows other options as well |
| Market launch | Approximately 2029–2030, Stellantis says “by 2030” |
| Dimensions, battery, prices | Not announced |
Opel's logic is simple. C-segment hatchbacks in Europe are losing buyers to crossovers, while an estate for the German market is a must-have. If the Astra gets only an estate body and, possibly, a crossover, it will cover both needs without a separate hatchback.
What will change technically compared with the current Astra L
The current Astra L launched in 2021 and is built on the same platform as the Peugeot 308, and the Sports Tourer is in its range alongside the hatchback. According to Auto Express, the next generation switches to STLA One — a new base that Stellantis is preparing for mass-market models across all its brands; the next Corsa is expected to be the first on it in 2027. The new Astra is being designed primarily as an EV: with newer batteries, more efficient electric motors, and an electronic architecture that can be updated via software. At the same time, Huettl noted that STLA One is not limited to electric drive only, and the final range of powertrains is still being selected.
For owners of current Astras, this means one thing: the next model will be a completely different car — with different body, roof, and trunk dimensions. Accessories from Astra L or Astra K will not carry over to it, and vehicle-specific products for the new generation will appear only after sales begin.
For now, for your Astra it is worth taking care of what works every day. For Astra L 2022+ the catalog includes model-specific floor mats for the cabin and trunk, for Astra K Sports Tourer — trunk mats tailored to the estate body, and for carrying a bicycle or a roof box — roof rails and crossbars. The full selection of tuning for the current model is on the Opel Astra L page.
