Winter cover for a passenger car: Megane III, Aveo T250, Lanos, Lacetti, Astra G, Passat B6, Santa Fe 2 — what to choose

This material was prepared using AI tools for topic research, structuring and initial draft creation. Fact-checking, editing, expert review and final approval were performed by Maksym Vasyliovych Radomskyi.

The winter cover fits only its matching grille: one version has a cover only for the lower grille in the bumper, another only for the upper one near the badge, and a third has both. Below we break down seven popular passenger cars — Renault Megane III, Chevrolet Aveo T250, Daewoo Lanos, Chevrolet Lacetti, Opel Astra G, Volkswagen Passat B6, and Hyundai Santa Fe 2: which cover to choose, how to tell your grille apart from a similar one, and when to install and remove the cover.

How to choose a cover in 3 steps

  1. Generation and front end, not the year. Megane, Santa Fe, Passat, and Aveo received updated front ends during production, and at the changeover between generations the same model year can come with either version. What matters is the look of the grille, headlights, and bumper.
  2. Upper or lower. The upper cover closes the grille between the headlights, near the badge. The lower one closes the air intake in the bumper, usually below the license plate. On the website this is stated прямо in the product name: “upper” or “lower.”
  3. Matte or glossy. Most of the covers below are matte only, made of ABS plastic. Both finishes are available for Passat B6: the matte cover is ABS plastic, the glossy one is polystyrene (as stated in the product specs). Fine scratches are less noticeable on matte.

All covers in this article are made by Digital Designs, black, installed over the factory grille and secured with the included mounting hardware. The full range for other cars is in the winter radiator grille covers section.

Renault Megane III: lower only and only up to 2013

There is one cover for Megane III — the lower winter cover for Megane III model years 2009–2013. It closes the air intake in the bumper under the license plate; there is no upper cover for this model on the website. Material: ABS plastic, finish: matte.

The key is not to mix up the front end. The refreshed Megane III was shown in autumn 2013 and sold from 2014: it has different headlights, a larger badge lower down in a V-shaped trim piece, and a new bumper with a wide air intake under the plate and thin daytime running lights in the corners. The 2009–2013 cover is not designed for that bumper. If your car has a small badge on the grille above the bumper and no daytime running lights in the bumper corners, this is your option. Other Renault covers, including for Kangoo, Trafic, and Master, are collected on the Renault winter covers page.

Chevrolet Aveo T250, Daewoo Lanos, and Chevrolet Lacetti

Aveo T250

The winter grille for Chevrolet Aveo T250 model years 2005–2011 is installed on the upper grille with a chrome surround, near the badge. The T250 is easy to confuse with the earlier T200 — production years overlap. On the T200 the headlights are separate from the turn-signal strip underneath them; on the T250 the headlights are one-piece and rise from the V-shaped grille toward the fenders. The product photo shows a sedan; the T250 hatchback received an updated front end separately, so hatchback owners should first compare their grille shape with the cover photos.

Daewoo Lanos

For Lanos model years 1998–2017 there are two covers, sold separately: the upper winter cover for the Lanos grille and the lower Lanos cover, which fits under the license plate between the fog lights. Both are matte, made of ABS plastic. You can get just the upper one or close both grilles. The year range is wide, and the Lanos received a refreshed front end in 2000 and was sold in Ukraine under several names, so before ordering compare your grille to the photos in the product card.

Chevrolet Lacetti

Lacetti also has two separate covers: the upper winter grille for Lacetti sedan and wagon and a separate lower one. The “SD/SW” in the upper cover’s name is not just a formality: the Lacetti sedan and wagon were designed by Pininfarina, while the hatchback was by Giugiaro, and the hatchback has a different exterior, including the front end. For hatchback owners, the sedan’s upper cover is not a fit without checking.

Opel Astra G: don’t confuse it with Astra H

The winter grille for Opel Astra G and G Classic closes the narrow upper grille between the headlights, under the badge. It is matte, made of ABS plastic.

The confusion here is due to the years: Astra H came out in 2004, while the G sedan and wagon continued for several years in parallel under the Astra Classic name. So a 2005–2008 car can be either a G Classic or an H — they have different front ends and different covers. Astra H has its own covers, separately for the 2004–2007 versions and for post-2007; those, as well as covers for Zafira B, are collected on the Opel winter covers page.

Volkswagen Passat B6 and Hyundai Santa Fe 2

Passat B6

For Passat B6 there is an upper winter cover for the Passat B6 grille — it closes the large grille in a chrome surround together with the badge — and a separate lower grille for the bumper air intake. Both come in matte and glossy, and you can buy them separately or together. The Passat B6 was produced from 2005 to 2010; the B7 that replaced it at the end of 2010 received a new grille, headlights, and exterior panels, so the B6 cover is not designed for it — the website has a separate product for the B7. If your Passat is a 2010–2011 model year, determine the generation by front-end photos.

Santa Fe 2

The upper winter grille for Hyundai Santa Fe 2 is designed for the pre-facelift grille — the listing specifies 2005–2010. There is no lower cover for this model on the website. In 2010 the Santa Fe was updated: the grille changed from horizontal slats to a mesh with horizontal and vertical bars, and the grille itself became body-colored rather than black. If you have that version, this cover is not for your car, even if the year is close to the changeover.

When to install and remove

In the product cards, the manufacturer states directly: use only in sub-zero temperatures; in above-zero temperatures remove it, because the cover may disrupt normal engine cooling. In practice this means: install it once stable мороз sets in, remove it during a thaw and in spring. After installation, watch the engine temperature gauge for a few days — if it becomes higher than usual, it’s better to remove the cover. More on when the cover helps the engine and when it doesn’t is in the article what to cover the radiator grille with in winter.

A few practical details. Do not overtighten the fasteners: the plastic under the screw can crack. If your bumper has parking sensors or a camera, before buying a lower cover check their placement against the cover photos in the product card. In spring, remove the cover, wash off the salt, and store it together with the hardware — you’ll need it next winter.

How it works

Match the trim to the car
Check the model, generation, and front end (pre-facelift or facelift), as well as whether it is the upper trim or the lower one. Compare the shape of your grille with the photo on the product page.
Prepare the grille
Wash and dry the grille and the bumper around it so that no sand or salt remains under the trim.
Insert the fasteners
Insert the included fasteners into the trim openings and thread the brackets onto the screws without tightening them.
Install the trim on the grille
Place the trim against the factory grille, hook the brackets behind the grille slats, and center the trim.
Tighten the screws
Tighten the screws evenly until the fit is snug. Do not overtighten so the plastic does not crack.
Remove in spring
When the temperature rises above zero, unscrew the screws, remove the trim, rinse it, and store it together with the fasteners until next winter.
