Volkswagen ID. Polo: affordable electric Polo – batteries, range and prices

Volkswagen has unveiled the production ID. Polo—an electric hatchback on the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive, 37 and 52 kWh batteries, up to 454 km of range, and a starting price of €24,995. We break down specs, equipment, the GTI version, and what to expect for accessories.

Volkswagen has finally done what it had been talking about since 2023: on April 29, 2026, the company held the world premiere of the ID. Polo — a fully electric Polo-sized hatchback priced from €24,995 in Germany. The production version of the ID. 2all concept received front-wheel drive, a choice of two batteries, a range of up to 454 km (WLTP), and a trunk larger than that of the regular Polo. We break down what is known about the new model, how it differs from its gasoline predecessor, and what it means for owners.

From the ID. 2all concept to the production ID. Polo

The model’s story began with the ID. 2all concept, which Volkswagen unveiled in March 2023 as an “electric car priced at around 25 thousand euros.” On September 3, 2025, on the eve of IAA Mobility in Munich, the company announced a new naming strategy: familiar names are moving to electric cars, so the production ID. 2all became the ID. Polo. This is the first model in the ID. family to receive an existing name, and at the same time the seventh generation of one of the brand’s most successful bestsellers.

Under the new strategy, ICE models keep their names, so the gasoline Polo remains in the lineup, and the ID. Polo is its electric alternative in the same B-segment.

MEB+ platform and front-wheel drive

The main technical news is the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive. Previous Volkswagen EVs on MEB (such as the ID.3) have the motor on the rear axle; for a compact and affordable car, engineers moved the powertrain to the front — resulting in more cabin space and a cheaper design.

At launch, three power levels are offered:

  • 85 kW (116 hp) and 99 kW (135 hp) — with a 37 kWh battery;
  • 155 kW (211 hp) — with a 52 kWh battery.

According to electrive, the APP290 electric motor produces 290 N·m, and the top speed of all versions is limited to 160 km/h. The drag coefficient is 0.264, and weight starts at 1,568 kg. An unusual bonus for a city hatchback: permitted trailer weight up to 1,200 kg (on an incline up to 8%). One-pedal driving mode is standard equipment.

Batteries, range, and charging

Volkswagen offers two battery chemistries, both using cell-to-pack technology (cells are installed directly into the battery housing without intermediate modules):

Parameter37 kWh52 kWh
ChemistryLFP (lithium iron phosphate)NMC (nickel manganese cobalt)
Power85 or 99 kW155 kW
WLTP rangeup to 329–334 kmup to 454 km
DC fast chargingup to 90 kWup to 105 kW
10–80% on DC≈ 23 min≈ 24 min
AC chargingup to 11 kWup to 11 kW

In its April release, Volkswagen cited up to 329 km for the smaller battery; in July, when sales of the 37 kWh versions began, it cited up to 334 km. DC fast charging is available in all trim levels, including the base one. Another useful feature is Vehicle-to-Load: the car can power external devices up to 3.6 kW, and this is also standard.

The LFP battery is cheaper, less sensitive to frequent 100% charging, and more durable, but it loses range more noticeably in winter. NMC has higher energy density, which is why it is used in the more powerful version.

Dimensions and trunk

The ID. Polo is slightly longer and noticeably wider than the gasoline Polo, and thanks to a short front compartment and flat floor it gains in space.

ParameterID. Polo
Length4 053 mm
Width1 816 mm
Height1 530 mm
Wheelbase2 600 mm
Trunk441 L (Polo with ICE — 351 L)
Trunk with seats foldedup to 1 243 L (Polo with ICE — 1 125 L)

Rear passengers get 19 mm more legroom than in the regular Polo. For a B-segment car, a 441-liter trunk is on par with compact hatchbacks one class above.

Interior and equipment

Volkswagen has brought back physical buttons in the cabin for key functions. In front of the driver is a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, and in the center is a 13-inch infotainment screen; both are aligned on the same line. An interesting detail is a “retro display” mode that recreates the look of the first-generation Golf’s instruments after its facelift.

Options include IQ.LIGHT matrix LED headlights with a light strip between the lamps, a Harman Kardon audio system (425 W, 10 speakers), a panoramic roof, 12-way power-adjustable seats with pneumatic massage, and Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition (SAE Level 2 assistants). At the rear there are sculpted 3D taillights, and the shape of the C-pillar recalls the first Golf.

Trim levels, prices, and production

The ID. Polo is offered in three equipment versions:

  • Trend — from €24,995 (Germany): LED headlights with automatic high beam, both screens, Side Assist, Lane Assist with Emergency Assist, DC fast charging;
  • Life — from €29,195 with the 37 kWh battery or from €33,795 in the 155 kW version with the 52 kWh battery: adds adaptive cruise control, a rear-view camera, and parking sensors;
  • Style — IQ.LIGHT matrix lighting, light strip, illuminated logos, sport seats, and heating.

Pre-orders in Germany opened immediately after the premiere; the large-battery versions went on sale first, and pre-sales of the 37 kWh versions started on July 16, 2026. Series production began in June 2026 at the SEAT and CUPRA plant in Martorell (Spain). The ID. Polo is part of the Electric Urban Car Family alongside the CUPRA Raval, Škoda Epiq, and the Volkswagen ID. Cross crossover. In July, Volkswagen reported over 70 thousand orders for the whole family, including 25 thousand for the ID. Polo. The model also received the German Car of the Year 2026 award in the Budget category.

Volkswagen has not yet announced official data on ID. Polo sales in Ukraine.

ID. Polo GTI

The sporty version is the first electric GTI in the brand’s history. The ID. Polo GTI has 166 kW (226 hp) and 290 N·m, accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.8 s, and gets an electronic locking front differential as standard. Pre-sales in Germany are planned for autumn 2026 at a price slightly under 39 thousand euros, and the car will enter the market in 2027.

Floor mats and mud flaps for the ID. Polo

There are no model-specific mats for the ID. Polo yet — as with any model in the first months of sales, templates will appear later. For the first season, a practical option is universal rubber mats with a raised edge: they hold water and salt, which in winter are especially harmful to carpet flooring and the wiring in the floor. For mud flaps, a universal option sized for the wheel arch of a small hatchback will work — they protect the sills and rear bumper from sand-and-salt slurry. Other options are in the car mats section, and brand accessories are in the Volkswagen tuning section.

We deliver via Nova Poshta across Ukraine; orders from 15,000 ₴ are delivered free of charge with our own transport.

Pros and cons

  • The 441 L trunk is larger than in the ICE Polo (351 L)

  • Fast DC charging and 3.6 kW V2L in all versions

  • Physical buttons instead of touch panels

  • Range of up to 454 km WLTP in the 52 kWh version

  • The LFP battery in the base versions noticeably loses range in cold weather

  • Peak DC charging power is only 90–105 kW

  • Official sales in Ukraine have not yet been announced
