In short: the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is an electric crossover on the MEB+ platform with a range of up to 600 km WLTP, while the third-generation Tiguan is a car on the MQB evo platform with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions. The ID. Tiguan is slightly longer and has a longer wheelbase; Tiguan 3 has a larger trunk, greater flexibility on the highway and up to 100–120 km on electric power in the eHybrid version. Both will be sold in parallel: the ID. Tiguan will reach customers in early 2027, Tiguan 3 has been on sale since 2024. Below is a comparison based on the manufacturer’s figures and tips on which one suits whom.

What the ID. Tiguan and Tiguan 3 are, and why they share one name

Volkswagen unveiled the third-generation Tiguan on September 19, 2023, with European sales starting in 2024. It is built in Wolfsburg on the MQB evo platform — an evolution of the same base used in the Golf. More about this car — in our Tiguan III review.

Volkswagen presented the ID. Tiguan on October 9, 2026 as the successor to the electric ID.4 and ID.5, and showed it to the public at the Paris Motor Show. This is a completely different car: the MEB+ platform, assembly in Emden, electric drive only. The name was deliberately taken from the brand’s bestseller — brand chief Thomas Schäfer reminded that Tiguan is Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide. The classic Tiguan with internal combustion engines is not going anywhere: VW will produce both models in parallel.

How the dimensions and trunk differ

The ID. Tiguan is 8 cm longer, and its wheelbase is about 9 cm longer; the battery sits in the floor, so the interior layout is different from a car with an engine up front. But the classic Tiguan has a larger trunk by more than 100 l: in Tiguan 3 it grew by 37 l versus its predecessor. For a family that often travels with big bags, a stroller or a dog, that is a significant difference.

What engines and batteries both Tiguan models have

Range figures are preliminary until certification is completed; acceleration and range by version are cited by electrive.

EnginePowerFeature
1.5 eTSI96 or 110 kW (130 or 150 hp)48 V mild hybrid
2.0 TSI150 or 195 kW (204 or 265 hp)the more powerful version comes with 4MOTION all-wheel drive
2.0 TDI110 or 142 kW (150 or 193 hp)142 kW — with all-wheel drive
1.5 TSI eHybrid150 or 200 kW (204 or 272 hp) system19.7 kWh battery, over 100 km on electric power

As for the eHybrid’s electric-only range, sources differ: Volkswagen initially wrote “over 100 km”, electrive in an update cites up to 120 km, British outlets under WLTP quote 60–77 miles (about 97–124 km) depending on version. For daily city driving, that is more than enough.

How the ID. Tiguan and Tiguan eHybrid charge

  • ID. Tiguan: AC up to 11 kW; at a fast charger — up to 105 kW with the 58 kWh battery and up to 165 kW with 77 kWh; 10–80% — about 26 and 29 minutes. Announced energy feed-out functions: V2L, V2H and V2G.
  • Tiguan eHybrid: AC up to 11 kW and, for the first time for this model, DC fast charging up to 50 kW.

In practical terms, this means: the ID. Tiguan needs charging at home or at work and a network of fast chargers on the highway, while the eHybrid does not have to be charged on the road at all — it will run on petrol, and the battery will be used for city trips.

How the interior differs

In the ID. Tiguan, Volkswagen brought back physical buttons: a row of climate keys under the central screen, a volume knob on the console, and real buttons on the steering wheel instead of the touch pads as in the ID.4. The screens are 10 inches for the instrument cluster, 15 inches in the center, and a separate 12-inch passenger display with a privacy mode. Conventional door handles also returned instead of flush ones.

Tiguan 3 received MIB4 infotainment and the Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, DCC adaptive suspension as standard, and DCC Pro as an option. For those who do a lot of highway driving and do not want to depend on charging stations, this is a familiar, proven format.

Which Tiguan to choose in 2027

City driving every day and highway on weekends, want minimal fuel useTiguan eHybrid
Lots of highway miles, no home chargingTiguan 2.0 TDI or 2.0 TSI

The price of the ID. Tiguan in Germany starts at €42,695, with the first cars to customers in early 2027. The manufacturer has not announced official sales of the ID. Tiguan in Ukraine, so in 2027 the real choice for most Ukrainian buyers will be Tiguan 3 at a dealership or an ID. Tiguan from Europe.

Which accessories fit Tiguan 3 and ID. Tiguan

Model-specific accessories for Tiguan 3 are already available — in the catalog they are listed as Volkswagen Tiguan 2023+ (the third generation was shown in 2023). On the model page we have collected:

  • Window deflectors — insert-type Niken Luxury wind deflectors, standard ones and versions with a chrome molding, installed under the seal.
  • Floor mats for the cabin and trunk — Stingray rubber, EVA in various colors, textile; for the trunk — Stingray 3D and EVA.
  • R-Line body kit — for those who bought a standard trim: bumpers made of composite polypropylene (PP), supplied unpainted.
  • Roof rails and crossbars — mostly universal solutions here: before buying, check which rails are installed on your roof (standard or integrated) and the length.
  • There are no model-specific side steps for Tiguan 3 in the catalog yet; in the side steps and running boards section there are universal aluminum ones selected by length — mounting hardware for them is selected separately, so confirm fitment with the manager.

Important: accessories for the 2016–2023 Tiguan (second generation) do not carry over to Tiguan 3 — the new body has different doors, roof and bumpers. More ideas for the third generation — in the article “What to install on the third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan”.

There are no model-specific accessories for the ID. Tiguan yet: the body is new, and templates will appear after sales start. Accessories from Tiguan 3 do not fit it — it is a different car with different dimensions.

The illustrations for the article were generated based on the official description and are not factory Volkswagen photos.
