What the BMW iX4 is and when it will go on sale
The iX4 (internal index NA7) is the next Neue Klasse family model after the iX3 crossover. Technically it is the same iX3, but with a lower, sloping coupe-style roof. As recently as a year ago, the iX4 was known only from spy shots and prototypes, but on October 8, 2026, BMW released a press release with full specifications and the first photos from the assembly line.
BMW’s timeline is as follows:
- October 8, 2026 — official premiere and first photos of production cars from the Debrecen plant;
- January 2027 — ordering opens for the iX4 M60 xDrive;
- March 2027 — sales start for the iX4 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive (orders for the 50 xDrive are accepted first);
- 2027 — the M60 xDrive will arrive in showrooms later than the base versions: according to BMWBlog and bimmertoday, its production will begin in March 2027.
There are no prices in the press release: BMW provides figures for the German market and warns that equipment and numbers may differ in other markets.
Which versions there are and how far the iX4 goes
All three versions are all-wheel drive: one electric motor on each axle. The drivetrain is sixth-generation BMW eDrive (Gen6) with 800-volt architecture and new batteries with cylindrical cells. The car also supports bidirectional charging—sending energy from the battery.
| Parameter | iX4 40 xDrive | iX4 50 xDrive | iX4 M60 xDrive* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | 275 kW (374 hp) | 345 kW (469 hp) | 450 kW (612 hp) |
| Torque | 520 N·m | 645 N·m | 875 N·m |
| 0–100 km/h | 5.6 s | 4.9 s | 3.9 s |
| Top speed | 200 km/h | 210 km/h | 240 km/h (limited) |
| Battery (usable capacity) | 82.6 kWh | 108.7 kWh | 108.7 kWh |
| WLTP range | up to 638 km | up to 828 km | up to 777 km |
| WLTP consumption | 15.9–19.1 kWh/100 km | 15.7–19.0 kWh/100 km | 17.1–20.2 kWh/100 km |
| DC charging, maximum | 300 kW | 400 kW | 400 kW |
* BMW calls the M60 xDrive figures preliminary. The 40 xDrive battery capacity and its top speed are according to CarExpert; the rest is from BMW’s press release.
At a 400 kW high-power station, the iX4 50 xDrive adds up to 387 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. On AC, the car accepts up to 22 kW. In the M60, the front motor is the same as in the less powerful versions, while the rear is a new synchronous motor; in addition, the M60 comes standard with adaptive M suspension and an electronically controlled M rear differential lock. For the 40 and 50 xDrive, adaptive M suspension is an option.
How the iX4 differs from the iX3
In length, width, and wheelbase, the iX4 matches the iX3—the only difference is the roof. It is 40 mm lower, so the coupe-crossover cuts through the air better: the drag coefficient is 0.23 versus 0.24. This is also why it has a slightly longer range with the same battery. The trade-off is a smaller trunk and less rear headroom.
| Parameter | BMW iX4 | BMW iX3 |
|---|---|---|
| Length / width | 4 782 / 1 895 mm | 4 782 / 1 895 mm |
| Height | 1 595 mm | 40 mm taller |
| Wheelbase | 2 897 mm | 2 897 mm |
| Drag coefficient Cx | 0.23 | 0.24 |
| Trunk / with seats folded | 490 / 1 600 l | 520 / 1 750 l |
| Front trunk | 58 l | 58 l |
| Range 50 xDrive, WLTP | up to 828 km | about 20 km less |
Dimensions and volumes are according to CarExpert and BMWBlog; BMW does not provide them in the press release. The iX4 rear bench folds in a 40:20:40 split, so you can carry long items without giving up the two rear seats.
What the iX4 looks like and what’s inside
Up front is the Neue Klasse “face”: narrow kidney grilles and twin headlights are merged into a single lighting graphic. The coupe silhouette comes from the sloping roofline, long wheelbase, and short overhangs. At the rear there is a spoiler with an integrated brake light and thin horizontal taillights that extend onto the trunk lid. The M60 gets M Yellow Lights daytime running lights, black M Shadowline kidney grilles, its own M spoiler, and a black diffuser.
Wheels are 20 inches with the M Sport package, 21 inches on the M60, with up to 22 inches available. The panoramic roof with heat-reflecting glass is standard. At the start of orders, nine exterior colors are available, and in March 2027 three matte Frozen finishes will be added.
The interior is built around BMW Panoramic iDrive: Panoramic Vision projection across the full width of the lower windshield area, a 3D head-up display, and a slanted 17.9-inch central screen with BMW Operating System X. According to BMW, the Heart of Joy central computer, which controls the drivetrain and chassis, operates ten times faster than previous systems. The Motorway Assistant allows hands-free driving on motorways up to 130 km/h—where permitted by law. The base audio system has 7 speakers and 205 W, while the M60 features Harman Kardon with 13 speakers and 430 W with Dolby Atmos support.
Where the iX4 is built
The iX4 is the second Neue Klasse model produced at BMW’s plant in Debrecen in eastern Hungary. Series production of the iX3 began there in late October 2025; the plant covers more than 400 hectares and cost about €2 billion. Gen6 high-voltage batteries are assembled there as well. According to BMWBlog, due to demand for the iX3 (more than 100 thousand orders in Europe), the plant has been running three shifts around the clock since September 2026. BMW does not specify how it will allocate capacity between the iX3 and iX4. Cars for the US will also be shipped from Hungary: there are currently no plans to build the iX4 in America or Mexico.
The same Neue Klasse design has already been adopted by the gasoline BMW 3 Series G50—so the recognizable “face” will appear not only on EVs.
What will happen to the gasoline BMW X4 G02
There will be no direct gasoline successor to the X4. As a BMW spokesperson told BMWBlog, the last second-generation X4 (G02) was built in November 2025, and its place in the model lineup is taken by the electric iX4. For G02 owners, this means one thing: the car will no longer be updated, and to keep it looking fresh, you will have to do the facelift yourself.
For the X4 G02, the catalog includes GBT facelift kits in M-Sport and X4M F98 2024 styling, as well as separate lips, diffusers, spoilers, and side skirt trims. The bumpers in the kits are made of polypropylene, and they can be installed at the network of certified DD Tuning service centers; a manager will point you to the nearest one. For everyday winter use, you will need model-specific floor mats with raised edges and window deflectors. Everything for this body is collected on the BMW X4 G02 tuning page. Please note: parts for the G02 do not fit the iX4—the new body has different dimensions, wheelbase, and aerodynamics, so model-specific accessories for the iX4 will appear only after sales begin.
