BYD Dolphin G DM-i: B-segment plug-in hybrid for Europe — from 28 990 €

BYD Dolphin G DM-i is a compact five-door plug-in hybrid measuring 4.16 m in length, developed by BYD specifically for Europe and set to enter the market in autumn 2026. The most powerful Boost, Comfort and Sport versions feature a 156 kW (209 hp) system, an 18.3 kWh battery and up to 105 km on electric power under WLTP, with prices in Germany starting at €28,990 before subsidies. BYD calls it Europe’s first B-segment plug-in hybrid — where typically only conventional hybrids without plug-in charging are offered.

What the BYD Dolphin G DM-i is and how it differs from the electric Dolphin
Dolphin G DM-i is the first DM-i model that BYD created specifically for Europe rather than adapting from the Chinese market. The car was unveiled in May 2026, and in June BYD opened orders in Europe. According to the press, BYD will also bring this model to the Paris Motor Show — details in our overview of the Paris Motor Show 2026.
The name indicates a relationship with the electric hatchback, but it is a separate model. According to CarNewsChina, the Dolphin G DM-i is 4,160 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,575 mm tall with a 2,610 mm wheelbase. It is 130 mm shorter than the European electric Dolphin and 55 mm wider. We previously wrote about the electric model here: New BYD Dolphin 2027.
BYD’s press release states that it is a Super Hybrid with DM technology: the electric motor is mounted at the front, and the combined range on a full tank and full battery exceeds 1,000 km. BYD promised to publish full technical specifications and trims later, so some of the figures below come from AUTO ZEITUNG, electrive, CarNewsChina and The EV Report based on the Europe presentation.
The images in the article are illustrations created from the manufacturer’s description (Sunset Orange color, slim headlights, black wheels, dark D-pillar), not photos of the production car.
What powertrain the Dolphin G DM-i has and how far it goes on electricity
The layout is classic for DM-i: a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine rated at 70 kW (95 hp) according to AUTO ZEITUNG works mostly as a generator, while the car is driven by a 120 kW traction electric motor (about 163 hp) with 210 N·m of torque. System output depends on the trim: 129 kW (176 PS) in Active and 156 kW (212 PS; in British sources — 209 hp) in Boost, Comfort and Sport. Acceleration to 100 km/h is 8.3 s, top speed is 180 km/h.
Range depends on the battery. Active gets a 7.42 kWh Blade battery — up to 40 km on electric power under WLTP. Higher versions use an 18.3 kWh battery for up to 105 km. Total range with a full tank, according to BYD, is up to 1,040 km. Weighted WLTP consumption is from 1.4 to 2.6 l/100 km with a charged battery and 4.3–4.5 l/100 km with a depleted one; CO₂ emissions are 32–60 g/km depending on the version.
The 1.4 l/100 km figure is only achievable with regular charging. In highway driving with an empty battery, consumption matches an efficient hybrid rather than an EV — which is normal for a plug-in hybrid of this size.
How the Active, Boost, Comfort and Sport trims differ
Four trims are offered in Europe. The base Active differs from the rest primarily by its smaller battery, while the other three differ by equipment.
| Parameter | Active | Boost | Comfort | Sport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery | 7.42 kWh | 18.3 kWh | 18.3 kWh | 18.3 kWh |
| Electric range (WLTP) | up to 40 km | up to 105 km | up to 105 km | up to 105 km |
| System output | 129 kW (176 PS) | 156 kW (212 PS) | 156 kW (212 PS) | 156 kW (212 PS) |
| DC fast charging | no | up to 39 kW | up to 39 kW | up to 39 kW |
| Display | 10.1 inches | 12.8 inches | 12.8 inches, Google | 12.8 inches, Google |
| Price in Germany before subsidies | €28,990 | €31,990 | €33,490 | €34,490 |
According to the UK’s The EV Report, Boost adds heated front seats, wireless phone charging and an eight-speaker audio system; Comfort adds 18-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera and Google services; and Sport adds black wheels and seats with suede-like upholstery. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are standard on all versions.
How much the Dolphin G DM-i costs and when sales will begin
In Germany, the Dolphin G DM-i costs from €28,990 (Active) to €34,490 (Sport) before subsidies. Some outlets quote figures after government support and the BYD bonus, but the calculation depends on the country and program terms, so the best reference is the price in the configurator. In the UK, the car starts from £23,990, and British outlets call it the cheapest plug-in hybrid on the local market. Sources do not make the same claim for all of Europe.
According to the timeline in BYD’s press release, sales in Europe started in summer, and the first customers will receive cars from autumn 2026. For Belgium and Luxembourg, the launch is announced by the end of summer. Sources describe the production location differently: CarNewsChina writes that the model will likely be assembled at BYD’s plant in Szeged (Hungary), but there is no official confirmation in the press release. Nothing is said in sources about the start of sales in Ukraine.
What is known about the interior, trunk and charging
The interior is black, with a floating touchscreen on the dashboard and “G” emblems on the headrests. The base Active has a 10.1-inch screen, while higher trims get a 12.8-inch unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Depending on the trim, a head-up display, a surround-view camera, a heated steering wheel and seats, a panoramic roof and V2L are listed — the car can supply power to external devices.
The trunk is 425 liters, and with the rear seats folded it is 1,225 liters. These are typical figures for a 4.16 m hatchback. The car charges on AC up to 6.6 kW (Active — up to 3.3 kW according to UK data), and higher trims also support DC up to 39 kW: 10 to 80% is stated in 26 minutes. From a 7 kW home wallbox, a full charge of the 18.3 kWh battery takes less than three hours.
Which floor mats and accessories will fit the Dolphin G DM-i
There are no model-specific accessories for the Dolphin G DM-i yet — the car is just entering the market. Accessories for the electric Dolphin most likely will not fit: the Dolphin G body is 130 mm shorter. All available items for the brand’s models are in the BYD tuning section.
Until model-specific sets appear, you can protect the interior with universal car floor mats: rubber or polyurethane sets with raised edges keep dirt and water from shoes in check, and before buying it is worth test-fitting them to the floor and trimming if needed. For the 425-liter trunk, it is better to choose a universal trunk mat in the right size. As for window deflectors: window deflectors are made for a specific door shape, so there are no universal options, and model-specific ones for the Dolphin G will appear once the car goes on sale.
