Jaecoo 5: compact Chery crossover for Europe — petrol, hybrid and EV

Jaecoo 5 is a compact crossover measuring 4.38 m in length from Chery, sold in Europe since 2025 in three versions: with a 1.6L turbo petrol engine (147 hp), the SHS-H full hybrid (224 hp combined), and the all-electric Jaecoo E5 (155 kW, 60.9 kWh battery, up to 402 km WLTP). The European premiere took place in July 2025 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the first UK customers received their cars in October 2025, and the hybrid was added to the range in spring 2026.

What Jaecoo 5 is and how it differs from Jaecoo 7

Jaecoo is Chery’s brand for “off-road-styled” crossovers, and the 5 is the youngest model in the European line-up. It is about 12 cm shorter than the Jaecoo 7: 4380 mm versus about 4.5 m. Width is 1860 mm, height 1650 mm, and the wheelbase 2620 mm. The T1X platform is shared with Omoda 5, and the design is borrowed from the bigger model: a vertical silhouette, broad body “shoulders”, and the signature grille with vertical slats that the manufacturer calls a “waterfall”.

The model carries different names in different markets. In China and a number of countries in Asia, Africa and Australia it is Jaecoo J5; in Europe the petrol and hybrid versions are called Jaecoo 5, while the electric one is Jaecoo E5. In our catalogue the model is listed as Jaecoo J5 2025-.

The British press puts it in the same category as the Ford Puma, Nissan Juke, Jeep Avenger and Skoda Elroq. All European versions are front-wheel drive only, although the “off-road” details are in place: black cladding on the arches and bumpers, approach angle 20°, departure angle 30°, wading depth 450 mm.

When Jaecoo 5 appeared in Europe and how much it costs

• July 2025 — public debut in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (on 4 July Jaecoo UK announced its participation).
• 23 July 2025 — official UK pricing: the petrol Jaecoo 5 from £24 505 in Pure trim, Luxury — about £28 000.
• August 2025 — the price of the electric E5 announced: from £27 505.
• October 2025 — first customer deliveries in the UK; in Poland, sales started at 109 900 zloty.
• April 2026 — Jaecoo UK added the 5 SHS-H full hybrid from £26 270, deliveries — in the second half of 2026. In Spain the hybrid has been on sale since early 2026.

Factory warranty in the UK is 7 years or 100,000 miles; for the E5 traction battery — 8 years or 100,000 miles.

What engines Jaecoo 5 has — petrol, hybrid or electric

Petrol 1.6 TGDI

The 1598 cm³ turbo engine with direct injection produces 108 kW (147 hp) and 275 Nm. The gearbox is a 7-speed dual-clutch automated transmission (7DCT). According to official Spanish data, 0–100 km/h takes 10.2 s, top speed is 190 km/h, and average consumption is 7.0 l/100 km. In the current UK specification table the power is listed as 140 hp (105 kW), while in the 2025 press release it is 147 hp: most likely this is a certification difference for certain markets.

SHS-H full hybrid

The Super Hybrid System combines a 1.5L turbo engine (105 kW, 143 hp, 215 Nm) with a 150 kW electric motor (204 hp, 310 Nm) and a dedicated DHT hybrid transmission. Combined output is 165 kW (224 hp) and 295 Nm, 0–100 km/h is 7.9 s, consumption is 5.3 l/100 km, CO₂ emissions are 120 g/km. The battery is small, 1.83 kWh, and the car does not plug in to charge: it is needed for pulling away and short stretches on electric power. Jaecoo UK claims a range on one tank (51 L) of more than 650 miles, i.e. over 1000 km.

Electric Jaecoo E5

The front-axle electric motor develops 155 kW (211 hp according to Spanish data, 207 PS according to UK figures) and 288 Nm. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery has a capacity of 60.9 kWh, WLTP range is 402 km (248 miles), consumption is 16.5 kWh/100 km. From 30 to 80% on a fast charger the E5 charges in about 27–28 minutes; AC charging is up to 11 kW. 0–100 km/h is 7.7 s. Instead of an open grille, the electric version uses a closed panel, and there is an additional 35 L front boot under the bonnet.

The source of the figures in the table is the official technical sheets from Omoda & Jaecoo Spain. The Jaecoo UK site for the petrol and electric versions lists the boot as 480/1180 L: the difference is due to the measurement method.

What’s in the Jaecoo 5 cabin and boot

The centre of the dashboard is occupied by a 13.2-inch vertical touchscreen, and in front of the driver there is an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Sony audio system (6 speakers in the base trim, 8 in the higher one), voice assistant, and a package of 19 Level 2 driver assistance functions are included already in the base version. The higher trim adds LED headlights, a 1.45 m² panoramic roof, heating and ventilation for the front seats, wireless charging with cooling, dual-zone climate control and roof rails. According to the manufacturer, there are more than 35 storage spaces in the cabin.

The rear seats fold 60/40. Note the difference in boot volume: the petrol and electric cars have 480 L, while the hybrid has 372 L, so the boot mat for the hybrid version is separate.

Which accessories will fit Jaecoo 5 (J5)

The first thing people usually add to a new crossover is mats. Roof rails are available only in the higher trim. Owners of the base version can use universal roof rails, which are shortened to the roof length, and for cars with factory rails, cross bars are needed to carry cargo — they are selected by rail type in the roof racks for rails section.

Window deflectors are a model-specific product: they are made to match the profile of particular doors, so for Jaecoo 5 choose wind deflectors specifically for this model in the window deflectors section.
